Topic:
Newer theories and concepts in Autism Spectrum Disorders

There has been a remarkable evolution in the concept of Kanner’s Autism to ASD’s in the recent years. However, the identification and diagnosis of ASD still remains predominantly behavioral. Potential causes being researched are both genetic and environmental in nature.

We have yet to evolve a single satisfactory hypothesis that details the cascade of events, from causes to the wide variety of symptom manifestations. This presentation would be an effort to review some of the emerging concepts that try to unify and define, underlying psychological processes and functional brain models that would explain the cluster of impairments in behavior. Some recent attempts to explain these are the theory of mind, central coherence account, and the empathy-systematizing concept or the extreme male brain theory.

The implications of these models would be in better defining core characteristics of Autism Spectrum Conditions, as well as informing targets areas for intervention.
